What is API 5L line pipe?

Line pipe is a type of pipe that is manufactured from high strength carbon steel. It is typically made according to metallurgical specifications that were developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API), which defines the standard for the dimension, physical, mechanical and chemical properties of the steel. There are two grade API 5L PSL1 and PSL2. The technical requests of PSL2 are higher than PSL1, some pipelines used for special conditions need to adopt PSL2. Line pipes are mainly used for the transportation of oil, natural gas and other fuels. API 5L line pipe is divided into 8 kinds according to the production process. Such as seamless steel pipe, Electric-Resistance Arc Welding, Longigudinally Submerged Arc Welding, Spirally Submerged Arc Welding and other four kinds.

The steel grade of the steel pipe is different, the higher the requirements for raw materials and production, and the carbon content between different steel grades is strictly controlled. For every 0.01% reduction in carbon content compared with the specified maximum, the manganese content is allowed to increase by 0.05% compared with the specified maximum. But for X42-X52 steel, the highest manganese content is not allowed to exceed 1.50%; For steel grade higher than X52 but lower than X70, the maximum manganese content is not allowed to exceed 1.65%; For steel grade X70 and above, the maximum manganese content is not allowed to exceed 2.00%.

What is the difference between PSL1 and PSL2 standards?

When it comes to API, we all know that there are two standards, PSL1 and PSL2. Although there is only one word difference, the content of these two standards is very different. Let me elaborate on the difference between PSL1 and PSL2.

1. PSL stands for Product Specification level. The product specification level of the pipeline is divided into PSL1 and PSL2, and the quality level is also divided into PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 is higher than PSL1, and these two specification levels have different requirements not only for inspection, but also for chemical composition and mechanical properties. Therefore, when ordering according to API 5L, the terms in the contract must indicate the standard level of the product, namely PSL1 or PSL2, in addition to the usual indicators such as specifications and steel grade. PSL2 is stricter than PSL1 in chemical composition, tensile properties, impact energy, nondestructive testing and other indexes.

2. PSL1 does not require impact performance, PSL2 all steel grades except X80, full size, 0°C Akv average: longitudinal greater than or equal to 41J, transverse greater than or equal to 27J. X80 steel grade, full size, 0°C Akv average value: longitudinal greater than or equal to 101J, transverse greater than or equal to 68J.

3. The line pipe should be hydrostatic test one by one, and the standard does not allow nondestructive replacement of water pressure. PSL1 does not require nondestructive testing, and PSL2 should be tested on a per-vessel basis.
