What is ASTM A120 black steel pipe?

ASTM A120 black steel pipe is uncoated steel, also known as black steel. The industry uses “black pipe” as a term to distinguish plain mild steel pipe from galvanized steel pipe. Therefore, black pipe generally refers to any ungalvanized steel pipe. The dark color comes from iron oxide that forms on its surface during manufacturing. When the steel pipe is forged, a black oxide skin is formed on its surface, giving it the finish seen on this type of pipe.
Black steel pipe is sometimes called black pipe, black iron pipe, industrial pipe. As mentioned earlier, welding is possible because the product is made of mild steel. But because of the various names used, some people mistook the black pipe for iron, mistakenly believing that welding was difficult.

Application of black steel pipe:

Black steel pipe has many uses because of its high strength and no need for maintenance. The main use of black steel pipe is to transport water or natural gas to residential and commercial buildings., or for conduits that protect power lines and pipes that carry high-pressure steam and air. The pipe has no seams, making it a better pipe for carrying gas. In addition, black steel pipes are also used in the oil and petroleum industry to transport large quantities of oil through remote areas. Black steel pipe is also used in fire sprinkler systems because it is more fire-resistant than galvanized pipe. You can also find black pipes in heat exchangers, which carry heating and cooling water.
Other possible uses include drainage lines and heating lines. However, Black steel pipes are not suitable for carrying drinking water because they rust easily, and because minerals in black steel pipes dissolve in the water and can also clog pipes.

What is the difference between carbon steel pipe and black steel pipe?

The key difference between carbon steel pipe and black steel pipe is that carbon steel pipe needs to be galvanized because it corrodes easily, whereas black steel pipe is made from ungalvanized steel.
Carbon steel pipe gets its name because its main component is carbon. Black steel pipe gets its name from a dark iron oxide coating on its surface. Both forms are very important for pipe manufacturing.

What is black steel pipe coating?

Because the black steel pipe was not protected by galvanizing, the factory created a stable layer of iron oxide during manufacturing. This gives the black steel pipes their distinctive ebony color. But more importantly, it provides the pipeline with a moderate degree of corrosion protection.
Pipes can also be treated/coated with coal tar enamel, lacquer or oil for added protection. This may add shine or a smooth appearance to the pipe.
