What is low temperature steel pipe?

Low temperature steel pipe refers to the steel pipe used in low temperature environment below -10. The steel usually used at low temperature of -10~-196 is called low temperature steel, and the steel used at low temperature below -196 is called ultra-low temperature steel, which has enough notch toughness. Low temperature steel pipe is mainly used in the production of ethylene, propylene, urea, synthetic ammonia, compound chemical fertilizer and washing, purification, desulphurization and degreasing in pharmaceutical industry with petroleum, chemical, natural gas and coal as raw materials, as well as cryogenic equipment manufacturing, ultra-low temperature cold storage, transportation of ultra-low temperature liquefied gas pipeline and its pipe components.

The main purpose of low temperature steel pipe

The national standard low temperature steel pipe is mainly used in the pharmaceutical industry to produce ethylene, propylene, urea, synthetic ammonia, compound fertilizer and other equipment and washing, purification, desulfurization, degreasing and other processing equipment. It can also be used for the manufacture of cryogenic equipment and ultra-cryogenic equipment. Refrigerators, pipes and accessories for ultra low temperature liquefied gas transportation, such as low temperature separation equipment for petroleum gas, air separation equipment, etc.

There are two main types of refrigeration pipes: austenite and ferrite. Because the crystal structure of the austenite cryogenic pipe is different, there is no brittle transition temperature in the low temperature section, so it is not necessary to verify the low temperature impact toughness. But it is stipulated that when the operating temperature is not lower than -196℃(low temperature section), the impact test can be exempted. When the operating temperature is -(ultra-low temperature section), it must be carried out according to the requirements of the design document. The ferrite pipe has an obvious low temperature brittle transition temperature and a suitable low temperature section. Although the low temperature limit for steel varies slightly around the world, practical industrial environments (liquid hydrogen) can be as low as -253°C or higher.

What is the difference between low temperature steel pipe and ordinary steel pipe?

Low temperature steel temperature range is below 0℃, most of the minimum service temperature is -110℃, individual equipment up to -150℃, can be used below -196℃, called cryogenic steel or ultra-low temperature steel. Low temperature steel pipe is different from ordinary steel pipe in three points:
1.Use different Low temperature steel used for making all kinds of agricultural machinery, can also be used as steel bar and railway fish tail plate.
Ordinary steel can be smelted by oxygen converter, open hearth furnace or electric furnace, generally hot rolled into steel plate, steel strip, profile and bar. Steel plates are generally delivered in hot rolled (including controlled rolling) or normalized condition. The chemical composition, tensile properties, impact power and cold bending properties of the steel shall comply with the relevant regulations.
2.Types different Low temperature steel according to the crystal lattice type can be generally divided into body centered cubic ferritic low temperature steel and face centered cubic austenite low temperature steel two categories.
According to the special performance requirements of some industrial steel, the composition of ordinary structural steel is slightly adjusted to form a series of professional steel, such as riveting steel, bridge steel, pressure vessel steel, hull steel, boiler steel.
3.Characteristics different The characteristics of low temperature carbon steel: toughness - brittle transition temperature is lower than the use temperature; Strength to meet the design requirements; The structure is stable at the service temperature; Good weldability and machining formability; Some special applications also require very low permeability, cold shrinkage, etc.
The characteristics of ordinary carbon steel: carbon structural steel impurities and non-metallic inclusions are more, but smelting is easy, good technology, cheap, large output (containing harmful impurities sulfur, phosphorus steel) is mainly used to manufacture engineering structural parts and mechanical parts of steel.
