What is galvanized steel pipe?

Galvanized steel pipe is a steel pipe coated with zinc. The addition of zinc improves the pipe’s resistance to corrosion and mineral deposits, increasing its life expectancy. Galvanized steel pipe has been used as a water supply line material in homes and businesses for more than 30 years. It’s also a suitable material for sewer plumbing.

Galvanized steel pipe mainly used in transmission of coal gas, steam. It was used as water pipe, but after several years past, there were many rust in the pipe, and water get yellow color for carrying iron oxide. The water not only polluted dishes or other sanitary ware, but also carrying bacteria produced in the internal surface which not smooth . As a result of the corrosion, the water contains heavy metal element is too much and is harmful to people’s health. For this reason, developed countries gradually banned it using as water pipe since 1960s.
Galvanized steel pipe has many other uses besides water and sewer lines, including fences, railings, scaffolding, and farm irrigation systems. It’s best reserved for large construction projects and has a lifespan of 40 years.

What do galvanized steel pipes look like?

When first installed, galvanized steel pipes looks similar to a nickel in color. But as it ages, galvanized steel pipe may appear much duller, lighter, or darker, depending on its environment. We’ve also seen homes where the water pipes have been painted, so it can be difficult to tell at first glance.

What is the application of galvanized steel pipe?

Galvanized steel pipe has been used as a water supply line material in homes and businesses for more than 30 years. Galvanized steel pipes welded with hot dip or electrogalvanized coating on the surface. Galvanizing can increase the corrosion resistance of steel pipes and prolong the service life. Galvanized steel pipe USES is very wide, in addition to a general low pressure fluid such as water, gas, oil line pipe, also used as oil industry, especially the ocean oil field oil well pipe, oil pipe, chemical coking equipment of oil heater, the condensing, exchange of coal distillation wash oil cooler for tube, and trestle pile, mining tunnel supporting frame pipe, etc. Hot dip galvanized steel pipe is widely used in all kinds of modern manufacturing industry.

A common application of galvanized steel pipes is for water and gas systems in building constructions. Since they’re corrosion-resistant, steel pipes are ideal for plumbing and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) applications where durability is a must. They also make great chemical piping since they can withstand high levels of corrosions and rust better than other types of piping.

What is the difference between galvanized steel pipe and ordinary steel pipe?

1. The difference between the manufacturing process: galvanized steel pipe and ordinary steel pipe are two categories of steel pipe, galvanized steel pipe refers to the surface of the steel pipe has been galvanized, the surface of the ordinary steel pipe has not been galvanized.
2. The difference in durability: galvanized steel pipe is more corrosion resistant, ordinary steel pipe can withstand higher pressure. Galvanized steel pipe because of zinc protection, not easy to rust, galvanized steel pipe is lighter than the general steel pipe.
3. The difference in use: galvanized steel pipe is generally used to do fence, fence, guardrail, etc. Widely used in municipal engineering, roads, factories, schools, development zones, gardens, squares, communities and other places. Ordinary steel pipe is now basically replaced by galvanized steel pipe.
4. The difference in service life: galvanized steel pipe because of the protection of zinc layer, not easy to corrosion, so the service life is longer.

Do galvanized steel pipes contain lead?

Galvanized pipes installed on water pipes between 1880 and 1960 were immersed in molten, naturally occurring zinc. Naturally occurring zinc is impure, so the pipes are soaked in zinc, which also contains lead and other impurities. The galvanized coating extends the life of the steel pipe, but adds small amounts of lead and other substances that can potentially harm residents.

Additionally, if your galvanized pipes were ever connected to lead pipes (including service pipes), there are more reasons to be concerned. Corrosion inside galvanized steel pipes may have trapped small pieces of lead. Even if the lead pipes were removed years ago, galvanized steel pipes can still periodically release trapped lead into the water stream. Chicago did not stop using lead pipes for service until 1986, and it is estimated that 400,000 lead pipes are still in use in Chicago alone.
