Galvanized pipes installed on water pipes between 1880 and 1960 were immersed in molten, naturally occurring zinc. Naturally occurring zinc is impure, so the pipes are soaked in zinc, which also contains lead and other impurities. The galvanized coating extends the life of the steel pipe, but adds small amounts of lead and other substances that can potentially harm residents.
